Bayi ASI eksklusif perlu minum air gak ya ?

Tentu saja tidak perlu ! Bayi yang mendapatkan ASI eksklusif tidak perlu minum air. Ingat loh, ASI mengandung 88% air. Meskipun kolostrum jumlahnya sedikit, bayi tetap tidak membutuhkan ekstra air. Menurut American Academy of Pediatrics, “Suplemen (air, air gula, susu formula dan cairan lainnya) sebaiknya tidak diberikan ke bayi ASI eksklusif, kecuali jika instruksi dari dokter atas dasar indikasi medis. Selama 6 bulan pertama kehidupan bayi, air ataupun cairan lain sama sekali tidak diperlukan oleh bayi ASI eksklusif meskipun udara panas. Ingat pemberian cairan tsb dapat mengundang masuknya kuman atau alergen.”

Selain itu, bayi ASI eksklusif TIDAK membutuhkan air ketika udara amat sangat panas (dg asumsi bayi disusui sesering yang ia mau). Bayi mendapat kecukupan cairan dari ASI. Beberapa penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bayi ASI eksklusif sama sekali tidak membutuhkan ekstra cairan. Penelitian ini dilakukan di berbagai lokasi berbeda (baik yang berudara lembab atau kering) dg suhu ruang berkisar 22-41°C (71.6-105.8°F) dan tingkat humiditas sekitar 9-96%.

Catatan :

Bayi yang mendapatkan susu formula juga tidak membutuhkan ekstra air. Beberapa sumber menyarankan agar memberikan air untuk bayi susu formula jika udara sangat panas (meskipun yg terbaik adalah lebih sering memberikan susu formula untuk mendapatkan ekstra cairan), atau jika bayi demam (konsultasikan dengan dokter anak).

Untuk bayi baru lahir (khususnya bayi berusia < 4-5 minggu), pemberian air amat beresiko.

· Bayi dibawah umur 2 bulan sebaiknya tidak diberikan ekstra cairan.

· Pemberian ekstra air seringkali dihubungkan dengan kenaikan kadar bilirubin pada bayi kuning.

· Terlalu banyak cairan dapat memicu kondisi lebih serius, seperti Oral Water Intoxication (lihat oral water intoxication).

· Pemberian air (yg jelas tidak mengandung kalori) akan membuat bayi kenyang, sehingga bayi dapat malas menyusu. Efeknya tentu saja resiko berat badan menurun dapat terjadi.

· Karena bayi kenyang minum air, maka jelas ia makin malas menyusu. Akibatnya produksi ASI akan menurun seiring dg makin jarangnya bayi menyusu.

Untuk bayi lebih besar (bayi < 6 bl)

· Terlalu banyak air dapat membuat bayi kenyang dan malas menyusu. Seluruh kebutuhan nutrisi dan kalori yang dibutuhkan bayi ASI eksklusif terdapat dalam ASI.

· ASI memiliki kadar air yang amat sangat mencukupi kebutuhan cairan bayi, meski udara sangat panas.

Begitu bayi sudah mulai mendapatkan MPASI (diatas usia 6 bulan), ibu dapat memberikan MPASI atau air pada campuran makanannya.
